At the hive, we pride ourselves on nurturing innovative and dynamic businesses. One of our standout success stories is Griffiths & Barnard, a design and build company that has been enriching the Somerset and Bristol communities since 2003. Since taking a managed office space at the hive in April 2024, Griffiths & Barnard have grown and moved into their very own unit, continuing their journey of delivering exceptional residential and commercial projects.

From Tenants to Independent Leaders

Griffiths & Barnard began their journey with us at the hive in April 2024, where they benefited from our supportive environment and resources. Their time here allowed them to solidify their business foundation, expand their client base, and refine their unique approach to construction and design. Now, they have taken a significant step by moving into their own unit, a testament to their growth and success.

Delivering Excellence Since 2003

With a reputation for delivering unrivalled renovations and new build construction projects, Griffiths & Barnard have become the first choice for discerning local homeowners, architects, and property developers. Their projects are known for their attention to essential character, efficiency, and style, ensuring every enhancement is both worthwhile and visually stunning.

Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

They prioritise considerate customer service, ensuring that each client’s vision is brought to life with the utmost care and precision. Their commitment to sustainability is evident in their choice of materials and construction methods, always aiming to create environmentally friendly and long-lasting results.

“Our dedication to high-quality, sustainable construction and considerate customer service is deep-rooted in our company ethos.” Griffiths

Enriching the Community

Griffiths & Barnard are not just builders; they are community enablers. Their work enriches the Somerset and Bristol areas, adding value to local communities through thoughtful and innovative design. Their projects enhance the aesthetic and functional quality of the spaces they work on, making them more enjoyable and liveable for everyone.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Griffiths & Barnard continue their journey in their new unit, we have no doubt that they will keep achieving great things. Their growth from tenants at the hive to independent leaders is a story of success that inspires us all. We are proud to have been part of their journey and look forward to seeing their continued impact on the community.

Women in Business Programme: A New Era for Entrepreneurs in North Somerset

Launched in May 2025, the hive’s Women in Business Programme is empowering women across North Somerset, providing expert-led workshops and networking opportunities for both aspiring and established entrepreneurs.

A Strong Start
With a number of workshops already completed, the programme has welcomed 30 participants – a combination of pre-start and trading business women. Designed to offer practical advice and real-world strategies, each session helps women navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship with confidence.

A Community of Support
One of the programme’s greatest strengths is the collaboration between women at different business stages. Whether laying the groundwork for a new venture or scaling an existing enterprise, participants benefit from shared experiences, mentorship, and lasting connections.

I feel so lucky to have this support available, it’s really keeping me focussed and driven to succeed”
LP, June 2025

Looking Ahead
In the workshops still to come, participants will explore essential topics such as financial management, marketing strategies, digital innovation, and leadership development. A dedicated focus on research techniques will help women make informed business decisions, ensuring their ventures remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

As a pilot programme, the hive is assessing its impact with the hope of securing future funding to continue supporting women entrepreneurs across North Somerset. The current programme will run until January 2026, providing participants with the tools, connections, and confidence to grow their businesses well beyond its conclusion.

Through this initiative, the hive is fostering a thriving network of women-led enterprises, supporting the future of North Somerset’s business landscape.

What’s the Difference Between a Business Mentor and a Business Adviser?

When navigating the complex waters of business, it’s crucial to have the right support system in place. Among the most valuable resources are business mentors and business advisers. the hive, for example, offers both Business Adviser Appointments and a Business Mentor Programme to provide comprehensive support. Both programmes are designed to be impartial and confidential, ensuring you receive unbiased and private guidance. While these roles are often confused, they serve distinct purposes and offer unique benefits. Here’s a closer look at the differences between the two and how to decide which might be the best fit for your needs.

Business Mentor

A business mentor is someone who provides guidance, support, and wisdom based on their own experiences. Think of them as a seasoned professional who has walked the path you’re on and is willing to share their insights to help you succeed. Here are some key characteristics of a business mentor:

  1. Experience Based Guidance: Mentors draw from their own business journeys, offering practical advice and lessons learned from real-world situations. They provide a long-term relationship, often continuing over multiple years and focus on personal and professional growth.
  2. Personal Development: Mentorship is not just about business strategies; it’s also about developing the mentee as a leader. Mentors help build confidence, improve decision-making skills, and foster a growth mindset.
  3. Informal Relationship: The relationship with a mentor is typically informal and can be more relaxed. Meetings may occur over coffee or lunch, and the conversation can range from business challenges to personal aspirations. Additionally, a mentor may visit your business to gain a better understanding of your operations and provide more tailored advice.

Business Adviser

A business adviser, on the other hand, is a professional who offers specific, technical advice to solve particular business problems. Advisers are often experts in a particular field and are hired to provide their expertise on a short-term or project basis. Business advisers at the hive support you from the initial stages of considering self-employment through to managing growth-oriented businesses. Here’s what sets a business adviser apart:

  1. Expertise Driven Advice: Advisers bring specialised knowledge in areas such as finance, marketing, legal matters, or operations. They provide actionable solutions to address specific business issues. It’s important to note that our business advisers are not accountants or solicitors, but they can guide you on how to navigate these areas.
  2. Strategic Planning: Advisers are goal-oriented and focus on immediate business needs. They help develop strategic plans, including business planning and net zero planning, improve operational efficiency, and identify opportunities for growth.
  3. Formal Relationship: The relationship with an adviser is more formal and structured. It involves scheduled meetings, detailed plans, and often a clear agreement outlining the scope of work and expected outcomes.

      Choosing the Right Support

When deciding whether you need a mentor or an adviser, consider the nature of the support you require:

For Long Term Personal and Professional Growth: A mentor is ideal if you’re looking for ongoing guidance and support in your entrepreneurial journey. They’re invaluable for personal development and navigating the broader aspects of business leadership.

For Immediate, Specific Business Solutions: An adviser is the go-to if you need expert advice to tackle a particular challenge or to develop strategic initiatives. Their specialised knowledge can help drive immediate improvements and support short-term goals.

      Conclusion

Both business mentors and business advisers play vital roles in the success of entrepreneurs and businesses. Understanding the differences between the two can help you make an informed decision about the type of support that will best meet your needs. Whether you’re looking for long-term guidance or expert advice on a specific issue, having the right person by your side can make all the difference.
