The Theatre Shop

Background

The Theatre Shop, established in 2015, is a volunteer-led community theatre located in Clevedon. The primary motivation behind starting this venture was to bring the best of the South West’s professional touring theatre to the local community. The Theatre Shop offers a diverse range of performances, including children’s theatre, comedy, live music, and poetry, aiming to entertain and stimulate both audiences and volunteers.

The Theatre Shop continues to be a vital community hub, providing accessible, thought-provoking, and entertaining performances. It engages with the community, allowing audiences to explore their creativity and fostering a sense of pride in the locality.

Support

The Theatre Shop received significant support when applying for the Town Occupancy Grant (“TOG”), a programme funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by North Somerset Council, Business West, and the hive.

Reflecting on the assistance received from the hive, the team noted, “We had great support when applying for the funding.”

The TOG was designed to help small businesses and social enterprises increase their viability in town centre locations. The support provided to The Theatre Shop included sales promotion, brand management, digital transformation, and identification of grant funding opportunities. An average of 12 hours of support was given to each applicant to enhance their business sustainability and growth.

The legacy of this support is evident in the sustained growth and increased viability of The Theatre Shop, which continues to thrive and serve the community.

The experience

The Theatre Shop has successfully implemented several projects to improve its facilities and audience experience.

These projects include:

  1. Shopfront Lighting: Installation of three window display units, and a light for the theatre sign above the shop front. This has improved visibility, attracted attention, and increased footfall and ticket sales.
  2. Coffee Machine and Ice-Cream Freezer: Adding these amenities has widened the refreshment offerings, especially for daytime and parent/child audiences, thereby improving the experience for local audiences and visiting performers and increasing bar sales.
  3. Water Heater, Sink, and Glass Washer: Installing these facilities has improved sustainability by eliminating disposable plastic glasses and replacing them with reusable glasses and a glass washing facility.

“The project has been very successful, receiving lots of positive feedback from both audiences and volunteers”, Mike Graham, Chair of the Theatre Shop, stated.

The improved facilities, especially the ability to offer coffees and ice creams, have been particularly well-received. Additionally, the move from disposable to reusable plastic glasses has garnered positive feedback. The sign lighting and display have significantly improved the visibility of The Theatre Shop.

The legacy of these improvements is the enhanced experience for both audiences and volunteers, contributing to the theatre’s long-term success and sustainability.

Mustard Café & Deli

Background

Mustard Café& Deli, originally known as ‘A Better Weigh Deli & Bakery,’ began trading in Clevedon on April 8, 2022. The business was founded by Martin and Laura Webster, who also own A Better Weigh Zero Waste Shop.

When Laura was planning to open the first shop, she attended the small business start-up course at the hive in 2018.

Laura’s passion for good quality food and cooking inspired the couple to open the deli when a suitable premises became available opposite their existing shop. The deli quickly became popular, with customers requesting indoor seating, prompting a remodel and rebranding to ‘Mustard Café & Deli.’

Support

The transition from a deli to a café was supported by a grant funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and delivered in partnership with the hive, Business West, and North Somerset Council. This grant enabled Mustard Café to refit their commercial kitchen and expand their menu and catering services.

Laura shared, “With the help and guidance from the hive, we were successful in applying for the Town Occupancy Grant.”

This grant allowed them to reconfigure their kitchen layout, add storage, and create additional seating, enhancing their capacity to serve more customers and host community groups.

The experience

“The rebranding and refit has been hugely successful, drawing in new customers and businesses”, Laura noted.

The upgraded kitchen facilities also allowed Mustard Cafe to extend their offerings to corporate and event catering, which had previously been limited by space and staffing constraints. The project left a lasting legacy, establishing Mustard Cafe as a local hub and a key player in the community.

Laura reflected, “The feeling you get when you have happy customers showing you support makes it all worthwhile.”

Support

This programme was designed to help small businesses and social enterprises increase their viability in town centre locations.

Walker & Ling benefited from retail marketing guidance, net zero training, and assistance with grant applications.

Remarked Sam, “The support we received was invaluable in helping us modernise our store and attract more footfall”.

The grant enabled the installation of a high-quality, vivid LCD screen in the store front window and at the base of the store stairwell, showcasing high-quality images and videos about the store’s offerings and history.

The experience

The implementation of the LCD screens has significantly enhanced the customer experience at Walker & Ling. The screens display a carousel of high-quality images and videos, including a store map, drone flythroughs, and information about the store’s history and accessibility features.

“The new screens have made a huge difference in how we engage with our customers,” says Sam. “They provide a modern touch to our traditional store and help us communicate more effectively with our visitors”.

The project not only improved the store’s aesthetic appeal but also contributed to its long-term growth and sustainability. The legacy of this project lies in its ability to blend modern technology with the store’s rich history, ensuring that Walker & Ling remains a beloved fixture in the community for years to come.
