Background
Mustard Café& Deli, originally known as ‘A Better Weigh Deli & Bakery,’ began trading in Clevedon on April 8, 2022. The business was founded by Martin and Laura Webster, who also own A Better Weigh Zero Waste Shop.
When Laura was planning to open the first shop, she attended the small business start-up course at the hive in 2018.
Laura’s passion for good quality food and cooking inspired the couple to open the deli when a suitable premises became available opposite their existing shop. The deli quickly became popular, with customers requesting indoor seating, prompting a remodel and rebranding to ‘Mustard Café & Deli.’
Support
The transition from a deli to a café was supported by a grant funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and delivered in partnership with the hive, Business West, and North Somerset Council. This grant enabled Mustard Café to refit their commercial kitchen and expand their menu and catering services.
Laura shared, “With the help and guidance from the hive, we were successful in applying for the Town Occupancy Grant.”
This grant allowed them to reconfigure their kitchen layout, add storage, and create additional seating, enhancing their capacity to serve more customers and host community groups.
The experience
“The rebranding and refit has been hugely successful, drawing in new customers and businesses”, Laura noted.
The upgraded kitchen facilities also allowed Mustard Cafe to extend their offerings to corporate and event catering, which had previously been limited by space and staffing constraints. The project left a lasting legacy, establishing Mustard Cafe as a local hub and a key player in the community.
Laura reflected, “The feeling you get when you have happy customers showing you support makes it all worthwhile.”
